Christmas Rap from HSM on Vimeo.

It’s that time of year again and my friends at HSM have created another killer Christmas rap video! Check it out! Featuring my friends Josh, AC, Chris, Jessica, Taffy and Hope!

Merry Christmas!

P.s. For more info on what HSM has been up to for Christmas, head on over to my buddy Griff’s blog at www.morethandodgeball.com ! :D

Lunch with Griff…too much steak…and other adventures!

Today I got the chance to hang out with my friend Josh Griffin who is the High School Pastor at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA. Josh is an awesome guy/awesome youth pastor/Star Wars nerd and all around great guy.

I took Josh out to a steak house (that’s how we roll in South Orange County baby!) and we ate massive amounts of beef. But we also had the chance to talk about youth ministry: what works/what doesn’t/highlights/strategy/etc. During the course of our conversation we covered a TON of great content and over the next couple days a bunch of my upcoming posts will be based off of some of the ideas that we discussed over lunch. However today I just want to touch on the fact that is is SO IMPORTANT to have wise & Godly mentors in your life and ministry. If you desire to be a great youth pastor to students you NEED to learn from others who have done it longer/have done it better.

You can learn a ton from reading books on youth ministry, from going to conferences and the like…AND there is something incredible about sitting knee to knee with a fellow youth worker asking probing questions. What kind of questions do you have in your youth ministry setting? What things are challenging you lately with your students/leaders? Leave some comments below and let’s get some great conversation going! :D

This past weekend in HSM (Saddleback’s high school ministry) my friend Keeley led one of our high school student bands in the song “The Cave” by Mumford & Sons. Here is the blurb describing the weekend from my buddy Taffy’s blog

We were inspired by an Alumni student who sang The Cave at Central Christian in vegas and thought the words of this song fit this past weekend. Best part is i called one of my students to see if he new how to play the banjo and he said no, but he said he would learn. So he learned the CAVE in a week. However, we had help from another former student who played this and made a tutorial video for my current student to learn the song.

Thoughts on the RADICALIS Youth Ministry Conference: Day #1

Today at Saddleback Church we began our annual RADICALIS (radicalis literally means “from the root”) conference for those working in ministry who want to learn about how to build healthy/biblical ministries and churches around the world. RADICALIS is really 15 conferences in one, including Saddleback’s Purpose Driven Youth Ministry conference, which is where I spent the majority of my day today.

This afternoon our student ministries staff hosted our first two sessions on “What is Purpose Driven Youth Ministry?” and “The In’s & Out’s of Weekend Programming”. While the content in the sessions was great, my favorite part of the day was simply connecting with other youth workers from around the world. It was awesome to get the chance to sit down with youth pastors and here their stories, to hear their excitement and concerns, their successes and frustrations. It was great to hear how youth ministries are thriving in places like Miramar, Florida and rainy Washington. I got to chat with youth workers from the netherlands and hear how God has been moving in students lives in that part of the world.

I guess the thought that stuck out to me the most on day #1 of the conference is this: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! If you are a youth worker and you are reading this right now, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! If you are hurting and burned out, frustrated and confused, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! If you are looking for new ideas to bring a fresh perspective in your youth ministry, there are other youth workers out there who are ready and willing to share their stories/ideas with you! Other youth workers around the world NEED to hear your stories. We are all in this together! :D

This is my AWESOME student of the week video. Let’s face it…working with students is awesome. So from now on I want to make it a point to highlight some of the great students in our ministry. This week’s “Awesome Student Award” goes to my new friend Adam. Adam is one of our HSM students (high school ministry @ Saddleback Church). I met him today when I was grabbing some lunch after our morning services. His hidden talent? He can solve any rubics cube in just a few minutes. AWESOME Adam!

Do any of your students have some hidden/cool talents? Share some of your stories in the comments section below!

Here is a simple video we made for our Student Ministries “Parent Connect Night”. Putting something like this together was super easy (we used a flip camera to film it and edited it in iMovie) and had a big pay-off! Parents loved seeing their students say thank you to them on the big screen. What other creative things have you tried at your youth ministry parent meetings?
